Perilla — tía tô — is an aromatic herb with purple-green leaves, eaten fresh with noodles, rolls and grilled dishes and used in traditional remedies. It grows easily in warm weather and can be picked many times.

Growing guide

  1. SowingSow shallowly, as the seed needs light to germinate, in trays or beds, and keep it moist.
  2. TransplantingTransplant at 4–5 true leaves, 20–25 cm apart, into fertile, well-drained soil.
  3. PinchingPinch out the tips once the plants are established to make them bushy and leafy.
  4. HarvestPick young leaves and shoot tips regularly, and remove flower spikes to keep the plants leafy.
