Overview

PU F1 is an F1 hybrid baby squash (young pumpkin) in Zinbioseed's vegetable seed range. As an F1 hybrid it grows vigorously and uniformly, giving an even, dependable crop.

Young pumpkin — bí non — is picked while tender and cooked whole in soups and stir-fries. Because the fruit is harvested young, the plants keep setting new fruit, giving frequent pickings and quick returns.

Key features

  • Tender young fruit for soups and stir-fries
  • Frequent pickings from the same plants
  • F1 hybrid vigour: strong, uniform plants and consistent produce

Growing guide

  1. BedsMake raised, well-drained beds, work in well-rotted manure (and lime on acidic soils) and lay plastic mulch to keep weeds down and moisture in.
  2. SowingSoak the seed for 4–6 hours, then sow 1–2 seeds per hole about 2 cm deep, or raise seedlings in trays and transplant them at the first true leaf.
  3. Feed and waterWater evenly and side-dress little and often once flowering starts, with extra potassium while the fruit fills.
  4. PollinationEncourage bees, or hand-pollinate in the early morning if fruit set is poor.
  5. HarvestPick the fruit about a week after flowering, while the skin is still tender and glossy.
